Fly In Formation 141 - Cold Camp
I’ve talked to The Dirty sample 4 times on Fly In Formation now, I think. Always good shit. When he comes on with a collaborator it’s an added bonus, like last round with Kaboom Atomic talking about their “2 Cents” album, which might have been my favourite last year. I haven’t really thought that through, but it was definitely one of my favs. TDS wears many different hats and is usually working on several different projects though, so much so that it’s tough to keep up. Case in point: Here’s the mixtape I missed that we talked about in this episode. I follow Handsolo on Bandcamp, and I follow both these guys on other platforms but somehow I missed the BC exclusive mixtape cuz I had overlooked hitting follow on Cold Camp’s Bandcamp yet. There are artists who drop as much as Dirty does but they usually just post it all in one spot under one name so it’s not as elusive to find all the gems. That’s part of the game though, I think.
Cold Camp consists of Chaka Boy, the Dirty Sample, and Bully Bravo (who was conspicuously absent). I noticed in the video for Mighty Icy that Bravo looks like someone I know, so I think I might be on to something but I won’t say it if they won’t. I hadn’t met Chaka Boy before, and didn’t know much about him, so learning some of his history on the West coast from the Low Pressure era was illuminating.
From the more distant history to the modern motivation to keep at it, we covered a lot of ground and spoke about the Calgary scene's recent growth; working with Handsolo; putting the chill into an instrumental; sounding authentic while still sounding threatening; sticking to what you know best; the collaborative process; Chaka's upcoming solo project; the intergalactic future of Cold Camp (what's colder than space?); the summer mixtape series on their favourite industry beats (and it's upcoming sequel); name changes pissing of Mr Quinlan; and a bunch of other really important stuff.
