“WHEN IT’S HARDER WORK TO SILENCE MYSELF THAN TO TALK, I TALK.”

Thanks for checking in. If you’re interested in knowing a bit about me, here’s the bio. My lyrics probably tell it better though.

I’ve been an emcee for a long time. Type of guy pushing my burnt CDs out of my backpack in high school. Lot of years, lot of running around doing shows at bars, lots of albums no one will ever hear again. I’ve always been into recording myself, experimenting with different sounds, and making music for the sake of making music.

After my second album with DJ Dice in early 2020, (“Doobs & Dice II - Double Duty”), I started releasing a string of singles on beats by various producers called the “#FPG4Ever Series”. That’ll never stop, though it will pause sometimes while I create or focus on spinning other plates. I think albums are cool but this feels to me like the era of endless singles and constant engagement. More albums are coming, but so are more random singles.

I released a concept album with 10 beats from DJ Moves called “10 From 11” in May of 2021 that you can find on all streaming platforms. I wrote and recorded a song a day for that project, and was happy with how cohesive it ended up.

A while back I decided to double down on the content creation lanes, and figured that I could probably contribute more to the kulture of Hip Hop (intentional misspelling via The Gospel of Hip Hop) and to the world in general by doing a mix show, helping promote the other artists making Hip Hop across Canada. I started “After the Smoke is Clear”(#ATSIC) in late 2019. I host the show, and curate the playlists every week, but don’t consider myself a DJ (I don’t have turntables), just a host trying to be the change I wanted to see by helping other artists promote their music.

ATSIC airs Mondays at 9pm and Thursdays at 11pm MT on CKXU.com and is archived for podcast listeners over at Mixcloud.com/Doobyis. Likes and shares are huge when I post new episodes on various platforms, thanks to anyone who’s been helping with that. Edmonton’s DJ Dice has joined the cast, and he’s been putting in work to take mixes to the next level with his decades of accumulated experience and skill.

ATSIC’s focus is to play new Hip Hop of all sorts, from Boom Bap to Trap and Drill (as long as I like it, which means lyricism is key), and playing lesser known or independent artists alongside their famous peers. Lately I’ve been playing less and less famous artists, because I have plenty to work with from undiscovered talent who actually need the support and also support the show in return. It’s been a surprise to me how much quality Canadian music comes out every week. I do what I can to get music that I think is good into as many ears as possible. If you make music, hit me up, lets link. Send me your new stuff if you think it fits in.

Another recent effort to assist in the continued evolution and growth of the Canadian Hip Hop scene has been a project I called the “Canadian Community Hip Hop Show Schedule,” which is an awful hashtag (#CCHHSS), but I didn’t set out to make a slick name, I set out to build a resource for fans who want new rap mix shows to stream every night, and for artists to connect with show hosts who might actually play their music. So far, the 7 day schedule has 49 shows on 23 different campus or community based radio stations. Theses shows are curated by DJs who care about the music they play and aren’t handcuffed to a set list chosen by a corporation.

For anyone looking to download the #CCHHSS pdf, its right here for free.

To keep things expanding through season 3 of #ATSIC in 2022, I started up a new podcast segment to accompany the music mixes. On “Fly In Formation” I talk to DJs and artists from across the map and pick their brain about the Hip Hop scene in their specific city. If anyone will know which local artists are most relevant, it’ll be the DJs, emcees, writers, and b-boys and girls. If you’re a fellow host of a Hip Hop program that airs on Canadian community radio, I want to talk to you. Let’s build this network. For now I want to try to focus on connecting into a network of mutual support and sharing some history from the scene as we do it. The kulture needs us to act as historians and advocate for the continuation of real Hip Hop traditions.

“Fly In Formation” interviews take place Tuesday afternoons on my Twitch channel. Come hang out while I do “Making of #ATSIC” streams previewing and discussing the music I’m lining up for the next episode. Sometimes I have cohosts to talk with, other times I’m just chatting with whoever shows up. Other times I’m gaming and listening to new rap from the past week to find gems for #ATSIC. Come say hi.
