ATSIC S04E37 - Hype Enough

This week, we spun the block for a second go-around, making sure we don't conclude the season with unheard music left in the stash—it deserves to be heard. This one's an unedited hour-long mix with a recurring theme of massive bass, snapping high hats, and triplicate flows. I intend to release regular episodes at least once a week until mid-December. After that, there will be a holiday-themed episode, followed by a Best Of Season 4 finale before 2024 rolls in. My first interview for the next season of the Fly in Formation interview series is scheduled for Jan 2, 2024, featuring Uncle Fester & John Creasy, who knocked out a couple of albums in the past few months and hinted at another one in the new year.

This playlist is heavily influenced by trap and drill. Some tracks are new, while others are a couple of months old. I won't get into a full winded write up because I'm tired right now, but I will say this mix is worth hearing, and we've got representation from across the country once again, maintaining a 95 percent CanCon.

We kicked off with JusJrdn's new drop this week, called “Dark Sky.” We discussed it a couple of weeks ago on Fly in Formation, and it was a treat to get a preview of this swelling organ and piano-driven, gospel-tinged ballad. He even recited bars from the second verse in our talk, marking, I believe, the first time a rapper has actually rapped on FiF. The interview is in audio form after the hour of music, so stick around for that if you want to learn more about JusJrdn and the Edmonton scene.

I selected two newish tracks from Calgary’s Yung Papi Bonito, one featuring his collaborator Black$tar—both are dope. This camp has been staying busy knocking out good music. Tapping in with them next season of FiF would be a good move to show some love to another corner of the scene in Calgary.

We've also got new big hits from Drezus & Dakota Bear and SNRK, respectively: “Just Landed” and “I Got Paid Today.” With the machines they've already set in motion, they don't need help from #ATSIC to find an audience, but the music's masterful, so I wanted to play it. On this show, I aim to juxtapose bigger names like these beside artists still gaining traction. The idea is to cross-pollinate fanbases, helping the scene develop more momentum. In a sparsely populated place like Canada, linking small groups of audiences effectively allows artists to tour and find crowds waiting for them. Maintaining a diverse roster on each playlist also keeps the show sounding fresh each week, making it a win-win.

I enjoy the dig for new music, so I’m happy to help people stay on top of new releases. There’s also new music from:

  • The City Natives - who are back with another album after a hiatus. They still “Do It (For the Rez)”;

  • Rozmo & Kid Lithium with Mamarudegyal MTHC - laughing at the competition on “HaHa”;

  • Fiktion & Obe G connecting from Edmonton to Vancouver for a flight check on “Cloudz”;

  • Just Moe - with “Scottie Barns,” an ode to his OGs;

  • Moonbeams (Zhe the Free & Parab Poet) - with “Ten Thousand Things” to tell us;

  • Nate Husser - declaring he ain’t no “Hypebeast”;

  • Jack Craven & Casper Marcus - telling us they, on the other hand, are “HYPE” enough for everyone;

  • Jason Packs & Hundolini - dropping Pokémon and classic wrestling references between gun and brick bars for “Raw is War”;

  • Storm Goring - letting the “Big Dog” out over some Spanish guitar;

  • Shordie Shordie with Murda Beatz - connecting Baltimore to Fort Erie, Ontario for their single “Sin City,” a song about carrying a gun in Las Vegas.

It’s a solid roster.

Making music is time-consuming and expensive, and since streaming has become the way most people consume music, it’s even more important to make sure to buy tickets, buy music (physical or digital), and buy merch from artists you want to hear more from.
