Fly In Formation 143 - Ghostboyrj

Toronto born, Brampton raised, now back in Toronto, Ghostboyrj is an emcee, producer, and community organizing head of the label Ghostown Records. He joined me on episode 143 to talk about his most recent album Cartoons & Cereal and taking things back to a simpler time - and bringing that approach into making art today. We also talked about what it’ll take for the Toronto underground sound to bubble to the surface - community and persistence. On that note we spoke about linking with other artists and building a team of multifaceted artists as part of his weekly GTR Wednesday series, and the indispensable nature of assembling a strong team. We covered a lot in this one. I tell artists to expect these episodes to take about an hour, but if they give me the go ahead and I have more questions to ask, we keep it running. From our history as tuba players to his producer influences (famous and local), and our weed strain preferences as a couple of canna-sseurs.

Good talk here - and I was glad to finally get a chance to chop it up. He’s got a lot of shoutouts on the pod from other artists, and deservedly so. If you’re into smoked out boom bap and bars, often paired with some soulful singing and introspective bars - tap in with Ghostboyrj and the label. The albums all play as well crafted and planned projects, you can hear the curation and purposeful choices through everything his does.
