Fly In Formation 140 - Halfcut & Cole The God
When you get artists from a place like Calgary getting repeat plays on American rap radio hosted by legends, it’s probably time that the locals take notice. That’s the case with Halfcut & Cole the God’s project last year, The Relentless Two. It featured a surprisingly satisfying western motif layered deep enough in Hip Hop golden era traditionalism to conceal it’s country roots, and Cutty’s wordplay and delivery keeps things firmly grounded on city concrete and urban aesthetic. The prooject’s been out a while now, and it’s well worth a listen. It was submitted for the Juno’s last year (I know cuz they let me vote), and it would have been one of the 5 nominees if I had my way - it was one of the ten albums I got to select as my picks. (I didn’t make the nominee round). The follow up, said to be coming soon (ish) is one of my most anticipated albums across the country right now - adding Daniel Son to the mix and hearing his take on the desperado themes should be dope. The consistency of both these bar smiths gives me no reason to doubt them, and collab projects with high level lyricists usually serve to push things to new levels with some friendly competition. Dan seems to have landed in the right place out in Cow Town, and linked with the right people.
For episode 140, Cutty and Cole hung out and talked about the album, its reception, it's extended recording process, it's inspirations, and it's follow up with Daniel Son - "The Relentless Three". We also talked about the Alberta scene glowing up, their recent trip to NY to rhyme on Sirus radio, AI having no place in artistry, making western music that isn't country rap, making country rap every now and again, lighting stages on fire, and a bunch of other really important stuff.
