Fly In Formation 139 - o p yeti
o p yeti is one of the artists who isn’t out there chasing much. Especially these days - he’s been in full on mountain man hermit mode out in Sooke BC just laying low and rapping when it feels right. The seclusion has given him the space to focus and gaze inward - “so much gazing.” That’s the point of view he shares with us on his new album Mirror Room. Over beats by fellow false label mate Oz - o p pulls the curtain back on his inner thoughts and monologue, laying out vague critiques and all encompassing abstractions without ever meandering too far into the nonsensical with slickly crafted bars like “You’re going to the top if you’re topless & you’re easy to spot if you’re spotless - I’m just being honest”. His delivery is clear and precise and pulls your attention along like a parasail trip that lets you view the scenic mountain coastline - beautiful but blurred by the movement. Presenting the album as one track is intended to keep the cohesion noticeable, by force, and it has the desired effect. With the yeti showcasing lyrical prowess and cleverly worded observations over high quality boom bap production ranging from driven, head nod cuts like “Self Destruct” to smoother, spookier, more plodding fare like on “GHOST… sure, man” or “La Fin est Proche”, this album is a solid project worthy of inspection from Hip Hop heads, offering a lingering De La Soul era nostalgia, genre bending samples used in expert fashion, and a healthy dose of modern, down to earth grit to match the moment. Go check it out and show some love.
In episode 139 we talked about the album process, Ruze Records pretending to be a label instead of just some guys who like making music together, aging and evolving, being completely oblivious of what’s on the Billboard Charts, letting the audience decide what you meant for themselves, breaking up with who he used to be, and the ease of recording with someone you know well and have worked with forever, plus a bunch of really important stuff.
