Fly In Formation 135 - Sarafin

Episode 135 with Sarafin was an extended talk where we covered a lot of ground - it had been a couple years since our last full episode, and about a year since we last talked on Twitch for a short drop in guest host on ATSIC Radar, my Friday live streams where I chill and listen to all the new drops each week. This time around it’s been a year since he released his project “The Source Vol. 1” digital only and “direct to consumer” - which I think is just the new term for “indie”, but there might be some distinction between the two, who knows. Sarafin is the type of artist who pays attention to the moves other artists around him are making, and soaks up game while sharing the knowledge freely - we talked about how lame gatekeeping knowledge is during this one. There was a lot of info and opinions offered here. That’s what the show is for.

“The Source Vol. 2” is due out in May, marking the 1 year anniversary of the first instalment, and you can expect some live streamed studio sessions coming up to document the process live from Sarafin’s newly refurbished studio setup. We talked about the intentions and inspirations for the new project, including some tweaks to the formula since last time. He’s been extending his Calgary root structure and building ground up with artists who want to push the scene to the next level, so we talked about his recent work with Manni Lewd, Ben Ugly, and K-Stone.

We also talked about the Calgary scene, gatekeeping, award shows, authenticity, and a whole bunch of other important stuff. Chill with us.

Hit follow on Youtube and Twitch. One day maybe I’ll hit 1000 followers and be able to monetize this show, but it’s still a long road to get there. Twitch subscriptions help keep the lights on, and you get a free one if you link your Amazon Prime to you your Twitch account, so use that to support your favourite streamer each month.

Listen to the audio only version of this episode exclusively at https://www.mixcloud.com/doobyis - where you will also find ongoing weekly mixes of 100% Canadian new release Hip Hop on my show "After the Smoke Is Clear" (#ATSIC) - each episode is followed by an interview with an artist, tap in and support the scene.

These interviews happen Tuesdays on  Twitch - come by and catch them live, or watch them a couple days later on Youtube.
