Fly In Formation 134 - Tariiiq

For episode 134 I was joined once again by Tariiiq, an emcee based in Edmonton who celebrates his firm roots in the Hip Hop culture as well as his Palestinian heritage. It’s always fun for me to reconnect with artists who I haven’t spoken with in a couple years, and I’d been looking forward to catching up with Tariiiq, who is one of the few unicorn artists that combines both artistic integrity and technical proficiency to a level that isn’t often witnessed. He’s not going to preach to you, but his music has always been peppered with social commentary and perspective on both the cultural and political landscapes. It’s not that he’s “tryna kick knowledge” - but he demonstrates a deft ability to elevate the subject matter without losing the hard hitting edge that we all love in rap, and watching his career continue to blossom while his skills and drive remain in tact has been refreshing to witness.

We talked about his new project with Edmonton producers Matt Byrnell and Goldenchild, evolving with and beyond collaborating with a live band, the Edmonton scene, staying distinctly Hip Hop, freestyling in dreams, being called toward the grimy crowds, linking up and bringing Icon Hip Hop to the 780 for it’s first out of town event, future projects dabbling in other sounds, and a bunch of other really important stuff, as usual. There were a few moments in this where I realize I cut Tariiiq off, which I apologize for. I get excited, and I’m not media trained. Watching it back to cut clips I was annoyed with myself a couple times. I’ll try to do better.

Hit follow on Youtube and Twitch. One day maybe I’ll hit 1000 followers and be able to monetize this show, but it’s still a long road to get there. Twitch subscriptions help keep the lights on, and you get a free one if you link your Amazon Prime to you your Twitch account, so use that to support your favourite streamer each month.
