ATSIC S04E17 - A Lot of Hours

Get ready for some bouncy, upbeat hits to kick off your summer! This week's mix is a solid 95 percent Canadian content because our homegrown artists are killing it. I spend countless hours sifting through the music to bring you the absolute best, so show some love to the tracks you enjoy.

You know I always start things off with a dose of Wu, and this time it's a freestyle from Cappadonna that feels so raw and off-the-cuff. It's a rare gem in today's world of rehearsed "freestyles." Cool shit indeed.

Hungry and Stitch are a reoccurring dynamic duo, and this week they bless us with "Paperwork." Picture triumphant strings, trap drums, and D-Rec providing that scratched hook to keep things classic. Hungry makes a comeback later in the mix with the ridiculously named "Saucestradamus," predicting a summer dripping with sauce.

Saskatoon checks in twice this episode, with Steve, the Connect coming through with Dizzy Wright on “Somw” and fellow Saskatchewan representative Factor Chandelier recruiting underground stallwart Ceschi for Sky High, a jam that find them harmonizing in the heavens over a screwed sample. Farewell to the terrestrial, we go full airborne like the plauge on this episode. Seems like drifting off into the great beyond is a recurring theme in this mix.

Out on the east coast things match the chill vibe. Kloud N9 makes an appearance with one called “On the Run”. More music that sounds like it needs some palm trees and a sunset.

"Coast" elevates us to the stratosphere with its falseto hook and laid-back chill vibes. Calgary and Vancouver collide as Kondrad OldMoney and Shea Michael join forces to bring us this gem.

Another duo, Fortee & yngxsno ask what you gon “Do About It” over a booming 808 and a chanting vocal sample. These guys both rep Sudbury, shouts to Mickey O’Brien for putting me on to them when I asked him who to watch for out there during a Fly in Formation interview.

Jarin Alab mixes traditional sounds with new age drums and bars on "Kaanaadi," repping his Indian heritage from Brampton. It's all about getting that money to help out the crew. That's the kind of shit that gets me hyped. Shouts to Spitty for telling me to check out Jarin Alab.

Edmonton represents with Pilly Newtron and Charlee Queen XO, hyping up the party on "Snake Charmer." Charlee declares herself the queen of twerking, while Newt spells it out for any doubters. A Timbo reminiscent sample adds that familiar club banger touch, and an organ solo to take us out brings the freshness.

Len Bowen from Winnipeg has dropped a new album calledNTHN4GRNTDand the lead single "Oceans & Beaches" brings some dub vibes to your beach party. Dance riddims that make people hit the floor. Keep an eye out for an upcoming interview with Len Bowen, folks!

"Lemon and Lime" flips a familiar sample from TLC's "No Scrubs" to create another summer anthem. EverythingOShauN and Private Name Private Number bring the energy and keep the dancefloor sizzling.

Electric City Underground enlists the talents of Halifax OG Tachichi for "Dirty Water." He goes full throttle, speed rhyming over some dance music. Dress code: three-piece suit. Tachichi has been on fire lately, dropping music left and right. I'll be talking with him and LxVNDR on July 25 to chat about their new albumFound Moneywhich dropped June 30 on Black Buffalo records.

Continuing into the rest of the mix, The Spanish Flies keep the funk alive with their track "Let's Get Down," featuring TeaFannie. It's yet another party banger that'll get you movin'. I can't help but wonder if TeaFannie is referencing Rubix & Fallennwall's group Shadow Works on this one. It's her first appearance on #ATSIC, as far as I remember. I've been keeping an eye on her ever since she rocked the stage at CKXU. Fun fact: she's the sister of K-Riz, another talented emcee known for his live band performances, hailing from Edmonton.

Heading to the west coast for a few, it’s a new track from Storm Goring, an artist highly recommended by DJ Denise. "My Love" keeps things sexy and smooth.

Vancouver resident Aaro fired an exclusive track over, so you'll only hear his new joint "So Long" here until July 10. I love being ahead of the game and helping spread the word about upcoming music. Don't forget to hit the presave and show some love when it officially drops.

Kxng Wooz takes us once again back to the East coast with his latest track "See Thru It," featuring PsycThaPrince. Then we shift gears to Toronto for the last three tracks: "BMX" by Detales & papasgotbeats, where they reminisce about the days of being players riding around; "Observatory Window" by ENKAY & New Villain, with the masked emcee overlooking the scene; and finally, Jack Craven wraps it up with "Fly Away," bringing us full circle to the initial sentiment of the mix. Good shit all around this week. These vibes are perfect for a dancefloor, beach day, BBQ, or an evening cruise. Enjoy the summer!

Don't forget to swing by Twitch, hit follow and sub if you’re feeling generous. Throughout the summer, I'll be chatting with artists from all over the country on Tuesdays for the Fly in Formation interview series. On July 4 at 3pm MST, we have Tariiiq, and on July 25, I'll be sitting down with Tachichi & Lxvndr. More dates coming up soons as well, stay posted.
