ATSIC S04E15 - Cooker

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and it’s smokey as fuck clear across Canada right now. The talent in this country never fails to impress me, and this time they've brought enough heat to create a scorching mix of the best new releases from coast to coast. I've got the track list below, including the artists' last known locations for the curious. Light something on fire. Find yourself a patio, a BBQ, or a beach and vibe out.

The heatwave begins with a new single from Ol' Gorilla Bones/The Dirty Sample, teasing his upcoming album "Revenge Vol 2." This track, "Red Rum," was a bit of a pleasant surprise. From the title alone, I expected some horrorcore stuff, which isn't my favourite shit, but instead, it delivers down-to-earth rhymes about the realities of the world. Good stuff, with a beat that'll make you nod your head.

I took the opportunity to include a new single of my own here, a track called “Hedonist Joint” that
I wrote and recorded a while back on a studio stream on Twitch, and then re recorded at Deez Waxx’s home studio last weekend. That guy’s got skills and some incredible equiptment to match, so I was pretty happy with how things turned out. Mellow summer mood type tings on this one. Not much left to do but burn one and watch.

Toronto emcee/producer B1 the Architect’s latest release, "Wildfires" is a flamethrower, calling out emcees for “covering up their insecurities with their balling.” Sounds about right. This also has to be the best back to back rap song pairing of any two guys named Brent ever. History making.

Moves and Cee!!!!!!! are back with some high-intensity boom bap from their new album "Restricted." "Retire" is a prime example of why The Drunken Arseholes can't. Haven’t got a chance to listen to the entire project yet, but this ones a jam.

Buck 65's title track from his album "Super Dope" is a BBoy breakbeat extravaganza that will have you contemplating whether or not you can still hit that backspin. His new album of the same name is another gem in the catalog of the East Coast veteran.

Tone Chop and Frost Gamble also make their mark once again, spelling it out on “C-H-O-P” , delivering brass knuckle boom bap that demands attention. These guys don’t quit.

Another standout track worth burning your eardrums for is “We Gon’ Stomp Shit” from The Mighty Rhino, who joins forces with Ultra Magnus on a cypher beat alongside underground legends Tragedy Khadafi, Guilty Simpson, and Thirstin Howl III. Each verse is fire, and I'm still amazed at how Rhino manages to bring such a diverse cast together on one track. Plus, his intros and outros are unmatched in the industry. Trust me, no one does it better. I use Rhino's #ATSIC drop all the time because it's just that good.

Justo x Uncle Fester x DK’s new one “Where There’s Smoke” says something about “once the smoke cleared” in the opening bars, so now it features the worlds worst DJ spinback curtesy of my copy/paste on Ableton. It's the title track from an album centered around the devastating loss of an apartment where Justo resided. The album flaunts solid, rich, and layered boom bap that encapsulates the classic era, and Justo's lyricism really brings things home thematically.

After Len Bowen and Tough Dumplin sound the alarms with "Toast Up," Spesh K brings a mellow vibe and some reality raps on a Classified beat with his new single "Moonlight," and Kryple's "Growth" takes us on a journey asking “whats the point of living if you're not gon’ grow"?”.

Sinzere returns to the party with “Electric”, which is the first we’ve heard from her since her 22’ album “Tabula Rosa”, which got a lot of burn on #ATSIC.

Saint John representative Stephen Hero serves up bars over chaotic jazz on “Nastier”; “just some quick shit to murder conservatives to”.

Saskatoon’s own Factor Chandelier brings new-school style over top of a floaty bass heavy beat for “Me and Mine”.

YNG Bear drops yet another bop with “Lestat”, which managed to have me walking around singing about being the king of the vampires for a day after I heard it.

Last but not least, Will TOA rizzmatically flips a hugely recognizable Fugees sample on "Bum Bum" to round out the finale. Summer grooves.

Come by on Twitch, I hang out while I make these episodes. Video from this one posted below. I was burned out from working in the sun all week.

Stay cool out there. Stay safe, and stop camping or quadding if you cant keep the nature around you from lighting on fire, for fuck sakes. Hope for rain.

Stay Up.
